Spring Foods to Lighten Your Day
The sun is shining more, the temps are slowly getting warmer, and this Saturday is officially the first day of spring.
To many, it’s a time to open up the windows to get some fresh air and possibly start cleaning out the house. As the weather and seasons change we may also want to consider changing up our diet.
The cold winter months have us craving lots of warm, hearty foods like stews, soups, and casseroles. As we approach spring we start to have chilly and warm days that are both dry and wet. This is a great time to start mixing up the menu plan. Ensure you prep a few light soups (think more broth based and less cream based), as well as some salads and smoothies.
Changing what you eat according to the weather and season isn’t anything new. It’s actually a part of Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old whole-body healing system, teaches how to keep the physical body healthy, and how this health relates to our mind, body, spirit connection.
When thinking of foods for spring time, go for light, cleansing, warm and freshly cooked options. Below are a few suggestions.
Focus on lots of fresh, but not necessarily raw, fruits and vegetables like apricots, cherries, lemons, and berries.
Choose vegetables that are bitter like arugula, broccoli rabe, collard, dandelion, endive, kale, radicchio, cabbage, and cauliflower.
Now is a great time to eat more legumes, eggs, and white meat from poultry.
Opt for room temp beverages instead of super hot or anything iced.
Avoid sugary and fried foods and limit red meat.
I’m not big on cleanses, but if you’re up for one, spring is a great time for a healthy cleanse.
